Physics of Failure (POF) Analysis
Physics of failure (POF) analysis is a term for identifying
and understanding the physical processes and mechanisms
of failure. POF analysis has been in use for decades, and
has resulted in considerable improvements in component reliability
and system maintainability, even as overall system complexity
increased. Traditionally, POF methods have focused on laboratory
testing and physical analysis of components to fully understand
why they fail. Within the last 10 years, great strides have
been made in POF analysis using computer simulations that
incorporate deterministic equations derived from basic principles
of physics and chemistry. The evolution of the computer
industry, as well as the growth of available material property
characteristic information, has made computer-based POF
analysis more feasible than ever before.
